An Industry in Transition
Germany’s engineering and development services industry is undergoing profound transformation. Rising cost pressures, evolving development strategies among automotive manufacturers, and the increasing internationalization of engineering activities are reshaping the competitive landscape for many companies.
In their article “Am Ende der Entwicklung” (“The End of Development”) published in WirtschaftsWoche Issue 29/2026, authors Henryk Hielscher and Artur Lebedew analyze the current state of the industry. Their assessment makes one thing clear: the challenges extend beyond individual companies and reflect a structural transformation affecting one of the key pillars of Germany’s industrial economy.
According to industry data cited in the article, engineering service providers employ around 266,000 people across Germany. For many years, the sector benefited from the steady growth of the automotive industry and the increasing technological complexity of modern vehicles. Today, however, the market is changing. OEMs are scrutinizing external engineering contracts more closely, development budgets are becoming increasingly selective, and international engineering hubs continue to gain importance.
Quoted in WirtschaftsWoche, Daniel Steiner, Automotive and Restructuring Expert at PwC, describes the current situation as “a structural crisis,” adding: “At the moment, I know very few engineering service providers that are not undergoing restructuring.”
Industry Consolidation Is Reshaping the Engineering Market
Current market conditions are accelerating the consolidation of the engineering services industry. Smaller specialist companies, in particular, face the challenge of combining outstanding engineering expertise with financial stability and the investments required to remain competitive in emerging technologies.
At the same time, consolidation is creating new opportunities. Companies with a clear strategic direction are better positioned to combine expertise, leverage economies of scale, and broaden their technology portfolios.
This is precisely the strategy ACONEXT has pursued for several years. The company has evolved from a traditional engineering service provider into a diversified technology partner serving the Automotive, Defense, Aerospace, Rail, and Digital Future sectors.
ACONEXT Continues to Grow in a Changing Market
While many companies across the industry are restructuring, ACONEXT continues to expand. Since its foundation in 2014, the company has grown from six employees to approximately 1,000 professionals today.
A key driver of this development has been the strategic expansion of the ACONEXT Group through targeted acquisitions, enabling the company to strengthen existing capabilities while integrating new technological expertise.
Among other developments, WirtschaftsWoche highlights ACONEXT’s acquisition of Apex Engineering. The Munich-based engineering specialist, focused primarily on automotive wiring harness systems and closely associated with BMW projects, filed for insolvency in early 2026.
Insolvency administrator Marc-André Kuhne told WirtschaftsWoche that Apex had “operated successfully for many years.” According to Kuhne, the insolvency resulted because “its largest customer did not call off previously agreed engineering services as planned.”
The acquisition by ACONEXT enabled part of the Apex team to continue their professional careers within the company.
Earlier, in July 2025, ACONEXT had already strengthened its technological expertise through the integration of the SPARKS Group and several additional companies in Southern Germany. In July 2026, the company further expanded its capabilities with the successful acquisition of Allgeier Engineering GmbH.

Technology and Efficiency as Competitive Advantages
Alongside growth through acquisitions, ACONEXT continues to invest in technological innovation and operational excellence.
Key strategic priorities include software engineering, automation, and the application of Artificial Intelligence (AI). Particularly in modern vehicle development, the combination of traditional engineering expertise with digital technologies is becoming increasingly critical.
In his interview with WirtschaftsWoche, Rene Esser, Head of Sales and Key Account Management, explains that ACONEXT has already automated approximately 30 percent of its software testing activities. This enables development processes to become more efficient while accelerating project delivery for customers.
Managing Director Uwe Hihn also views the ongoing market consolidation as an opportunity for sustainable long-term growth. In the WirtschaftsWoche article, he notes that Germany’s engineering services market remains highly fragmented. Many companies possess exceptional engineering expertise but face comparatively high administrative costs due to their size.
Consequently, ACONEXT follows a clear integration strategy during acquisitions: preserving technical expertise and established engineering teams while integrating them into a broader internal network of experts and streamlining administrative processes.
Diversification as a Strategic Priority
The transformation of the automotive industry demonstrates that strong dependence on individual customers or markets increases business risk in an increasingly volatile environment.
To address these challenges, ACONEXT continues to diversify its service portfolio. Building on decades of experience in Automotive Engineering, the company is steadily expanding its capabilities across Defense, Aerospace, Software Engineering, Digitalization, and Artificial Intelligence.
This diversified approach enables ACONEXT not only to meet today’s industrial requirements but also to address tomorrow’s technology trends.
Creating Long-Term Value for Clients and Talent
The transformation of the engineering industry will continue to shape the market in the years ahead. Technological expertise, financial stability, and the ability to integrate new competencies will remain decisive success factors for engineering companies.
ACONEXT demonstrates that sustainable growth is achievable even in challenging market conditions when strategic decision-making, continuous technological development, and responsible corporate leadership work together.
For clients, this means access to a reliable technology partner with broad engineering expertise. For engineers and IT professionals, it creates new opportunities to contribute to future-oriented projects across Automotive, Defense, Aerospace, Rail, and the broader digital transformation.
